Essay 3 Reflection

I’d say I did an okay job of building my credibility throughout essay 3. I chose good sources that either were strongly in favor of the argument I was making or they were neutral on the Deforestation. I conducted a lot of research and the sources I did choose had a lot of information and these sources supplied me with the knowledge necessary to make this essay on deforestation. Also I did appeal to a wide audience in my essay and I conceded to an opposing viewpoint in my essay. The solution of making better use of the land we have already and supporting to plant more trees and make more environmentally friendly choices is ethical. Overall my essay was written in the correct format and used proper vocabulary. My essay logically did appeal to reason as deforestation is an issue in which everyone will lose because forests do make a portion of the worlds oxygen and by cutting down forests it is not helping our planet. I’d personally say that the evidence provided to back up my claims was enough. The overall structure of my paper seemed to flow in order from claim to the next. I didn’t include fallacies or contradictions in the essay. I believe I did a great job of appealing to emotions in my paper through the use of animals because I think most people would like to help animals rather than hurt them. Also I appealed to emotions the use of others being affected by this and in a way it says that it could be anyone in this scenario. I also appealed to emotions through the use of my call to action. Overall I believe I did a good job on this essay although it was a bit tough to find opposing arguments for deforestation. Once I did find something to work with it was easier.

Fighting for Forests

Deforestation is the large-scale removal of trees in the forests. Trees are usually removed to make room for urban development, roads, or even for agriculture. Though not all deforestation is done intentionally, some is done unintentionally by wildfires. Deforestation has had serious effects even though forests still make up 30 percent of Earth’s surface. It is estimated by “The World Wildlife” that we lose about 18.7 million acres of trees every year.We must plant trees and reduce Deforestation to help our climate and increase oxygen. I plan to show you the negative effects deforestation has on our planet, including extreme effects on climate change, loss of habitat for animals and many negative factors for the people indigenous to the forests. I’d also like to point out some possible solutions to this issue and how we should be going about solving the problem of Deforestation.

Deforestation is a major issue that has been negatively affecting our planet for a long time. According to Scientific America, deforestation is accountable for more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than all the world’s cars and trucks on roads. Scientific America states that according to the World Carfree Network,  cars and trucks are responsible for 14 percent of the world’s carbon emissions. While deforestation according to most analysts alone accounts for upwards of 15 percent. Logging is so bad because when a tree is cut down and then cleared out of a forest the carbon that the tree was storing inside of it and even in the soil is then released. While on a small scale it goes by unknown but on the scale that trees are currently being cut down to establish new developments it causes a major reaction. This evidence demonstrates that deforestation is a serious issue that we need to start addressing before it is too late. By fighting deforestation it has been identified that by having a global effort to restore 150 million hectares of the world’s deforested and degraded lands by 2020 and twice as much by 2030 that it would be a sixth of the carbon emissions needed to close the emissions gap. This shows that what is necessary is a global effort to start solving this problem and stop fueling it. Though, in order to start a fight to stop deforestation there must be an incentive to encourage help. This is because the people that live near forests such as the Amazon rain forests, while they live near this forest profit is the factor that drives them. This is because it costs to conserve forest and on the flip side it pays to sell wood charcoal and natural oils and many more things that come out of deforestation.

Deforestation has not only affected climate change and the people of areas where forests are but it has also affected the animals that call the forest home. This is because to those animals that call forests home once trees are cut down and cleared out to make new developments. The animals are left without a home, a place to breed and a source of food, which overall makes it harder for animals to survive as stated by greentumble. Similarly to this by cutting down forests this also leaves animals more vulnerable to predators and poachers and even weather that was not experienced before due to protection made by the forest which leads to some species of animals to go extinct or become near to going extinct. This evidence shows that not only are we affected by this issue but also the wildlife is. It also shows that this is a very selfish act on us to put the ability to make a profit over the wellbeing of our wildlife. Similarly to this by cutting down forests this also leaves animals more vulnerable to predators and poachers.

Not everyone is against deforestation and this is because deforestation also has pros. The future of Working a Leadership and Career Blog, that has been recognized nationally by many publications, states that a benefit that comes out of deforestation is that it gives us the products that we use on a daily basis. This includes paper, furniture, and materials used to build your home and cocoa. Also another benefit that comes from deforestation is that by cutting down forests we create more room to build neighborhoods and areas for people to live which is necessary for the growing population of the earth (20 advantages of disadvantages of Deforestation). Another thing that comes out of deforestation would be that Social safety net programs receive funding through deforestation efforts. This means that when a company makes a profit from deforestation, then the local government taxes them and it funds local government activities. Although there are some positives that come out of deforestation, the negatives far outweigh the benefits. This is because although we all live off of some byproducts that come from deforestation, we cannot use these resources carelessly; we need to manage the amount of trees we cut down so that we can try and limit our effect on our planet. Although deforestation helps many people by giving them an area to live, it is not a justifiable reason as to why we should continue this practice to the extent that we do because even though it may help people, it will ultimately hurt them because of many factors like soil erosion and possible flooding in the area where they now live. Also, while it gives them a place to live, it also takes away shelter for animals. Instead of cutting down forests, we could be making better use of the space we already have. Even though someone might say that deforestation helps to discover new species, it also hurts those potential new species by making it harder for them to survive and search for for food and protection. Taking all the evidence in consideration, an overall viewpoint shows that there is less of an advantage than disadvantages to deforestation because the benefits that come are short-term and limited.

Deforestation is a major issue that we all are affected by regardless of who you are, and there are ways that we can fight against deforestation and help our planet. Solutions that are needed to stop deforestation as stated by Greenpeace, an organization whose mission is to “use peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future,” include standing with the indigenous people that call forests home. Greenpeace says that “forests around the world have been home to Indigenous Peoples for tens of thousands of years. Evidence shows that when Indigenous Peoples’ rights to traditional lands and self-determination are respected, forests stay standing.” This shows that if we stand with those indigenous to the forest that we may be able to stop or at least slow down the rate at which forests are being cut down. Also another possible solution stated by Greenpeace is to promote sustainable choices and this falls under avoiding the use of one time packaging, eating sustainable food, and making other choices that will be positive on forests and the environment. By making these choices, it can have a great impact on our planet and society.

This has shown that we all play a part in conserving our world and that if we each take a few steps towards making more environmentally-friendly choices, we can start a culture that is based around protecting and conserving our planet rather than one that is based around taking all that we can out of it. Also by doing so we will see many benefits out of it such as seeing animal populations increase, positive effects on the climate, and allowing those indigenous to the forest to live in the way the want. Although not everyone can plant a million trees, you can start by making the right choices and begin to make choices that are environmentally-friendly.

Another thing that comes out of deforestation would be that once forests are cut down it gives us an opportunity to discover new species. This is because it allows to discover new species by being able to encounter these species out in the open instead of having to travel into a deep forest through thick layers of trees where a researcher might not be able to see a species due to the thick layers of trees. Although there are positives that come out of deforestation the negatives far outweigh the benefits. Part 1 Outline of Why a Black Student Union?

introduction: Background info on the BSU about money going into it. Also like a counter claim stating that its the only union that has paid staff

First paragraph: talks about how the money that is put into it is for renovations that the university has failed to do. Then it talks about fixing things such as leaks in the roof and damage done to the building because of the leaks and a getting a new heat and cooling system.

Second paragraph: States that no one at the BSU receives a salary for student activities. The evidence that the author provides is that five students are paid to tutor remedial classes.

Third paragraph: This paragraph addresses the counter claims that having the BSU doesn’t create racial hostility and it imposes a new form of segregation. This paragraph also addresses the things that are held at the BSU to help the students. This includes career week where the students line meet representatives from companies.

Fourth Paragraph: This paragraph wraps it all together and states why it is good to have a Black Student Union. Also it states that this is a place for black students to receive help.

Parts of an Argument:

(Claim) Higher education needs to be more accessible to all students. This issue could be solved through more funding for lower income communities so that they can get a higher education.(Grounds) Higher education should be made more accessible because everyone deserves an equal opportunity to get a higher education. Higher education is not as accessible to all and that is unfair to those that want to learn but don’t have an equal opportunity. The government needs to do more to help those that want to learn but do not have the same opportunity as others because of financial problems.

Argument: Higher education if not as accessible in lower income communities

Emotional: (slippery slope)If we don’t make Higher education more accessible to all it will cause many students in lower income communities to live the rest of their lives in prison.

Ethical: ( appeals to false authority) Higher education is only accessible by 10 percent of the population as stated by blank

Logical: (hasty generalization) Higher education is the only way to succeed.

Topic: Higher Education (accessibility)

Id say this issue is a pretty average size problem, like its not something life-threatening but it is something of importance that needs to be looked at. I know this is an average sized problem because the idea of getting a higher education is not encouraged as much as it should be in lower income communities due to the cost of college. the communities this issue effects are lower income students, families and schools. The community it effects the most would be lower income students because they are unable to achieve greater things and are stuck due to the cost of higher education. I empathize for these communities inability to achieve a going to college or university. This issue is important to me because I believe everyone should have the ability to get higher education if they would like to. I believe this should be important to my classmates because it could be anyone in that situation.

Part 1: Essay 2 Reflection

The experience writing essay 2 compared to essay one was tough. This essay was more tough than essay one because it was hard to find something with meaning to talk about but once I found something it was a bit more essay to recall the events and put it into words. I personally like to write pieces with meaning that aren’t really to centered on myself. As styles go I guess I would say research papers. I enjoy talking about topics that effect many people or life in general I prefer to talk about these topics because it comes more easier to me.

Part 2: Essay 3 potential topic

Higher Education: (Accessibility) The communities affected by the accessibility of higher education would be lower income families, neighborhoods, and schools. Potential solutions to this issue would be making higher education more accessible to lower income communities through more federal support to those communities. Also another solution could be more encouragement to lower income school students to get a higher education and the benefits that come with getting higher education.

Perception Isn’t Reality

Growing up, I always did what I could to just be an overall good person and make people feel welcomed. Family members and close friends would say that I was kind and that I had a welcoming personality. These constant reminders made me feel great and showed me that I was doing a great job of showing others the kind personality I had. Just by these experiences, I believed that everybody saw me as the kind person I was, but learned I was mistaken when I got my first job.

I was sixteen and I was working at the local 99 cents store near my house. I was hired as a cashier which seemed pretty easy, so that got me excited. I was working at the store for a bit— but this day felt different. I did my usual things, such as… clocking in and then asking the manager on duty what I was going to do for the night. They put me on the floor to fix aisles and organize the products on the shelves. It was an easy task and I worked on it that the whole day, but by the time my break came around I noticed that not even one customer had come up to me for assistance. After my break, I went up to my coworkers and casually asked if they had any customers come up and ask them questions. My coworker said that they had customers come up to them all day. I found it weird that no one asked me for assistance, but didn’t think too much of it.. I just thought no one came up to me because the customers just didn’t have any questions yet. The rest of that day I worked and stayed alert just in case any customer wanted some help finding something or had a question about something. It was no use. No one came up to me that day and I went home thinking about it a lot more than I should’ve.

I tossed and turned all night thinking of any other reason as to why no one had asked for help specifically from me. I laid in bed thinking to myself, Maybe I forgot to put on deodorant. Or maybe the customers believed that I was too busy. Maybe I just didn’t pay enough attention and there were customers trying to get my attention. This last thought eased my mind and I finally fell asleep thinking that I had found the answer to my question. The next morning, I woke up ready to go to work later that day, thinking it was just pure coincidence that no one had come up to me the day before. I went through my day as I would any other day. I went to school and then I drove home at the end of my fourth period as I did any day. Once I got home I took a short nap and after that I headed to work. When I arrived at work I walked straight to the back, put in my employee number and clocked in.  I put the purple name tag that read my name in small writing on the left side of my collar, as I always do. I then headed out to the sales floor. Once I was out there, I headed to the aisles I was assigned to and began to move things up and place things that were in the wrong aisles back in the right aisles. I was focused on my job, but not so focused that I couldn’t notice the customers around me walking and shopping around for items we sold. I bent down to start picking up some items that were left on the baseboards, and I also hung up items that had fallen. While I did that I noticed a customer at the other end of the aisle and didn’t think much of it. I’d be finished by the time they got to me. A couple minutes passed and I got up and noticed a  customer was beside me with a shopping cart trying to pass on by. They must’ve snuck up on me and I felt rude for not noticing them. I quickly moved out of their way and apologized, but they turned and gave me a dirty look. I figured they must’ve been there for a couple minutes trying to pass on by and I had been in their way working away. I thought, Why didn’t they just simply say “ excuse me”? I would have gladly moved out of their way. The end of that day couldn’t come soon enough. I think it’s because I couldn’t focus all day I constantly checked the time and went to the bathroom to make sure I looked presentable. Every Time I checked the time it had only been 10 minutes later than the last time I checked. The day just wouldn’t end and I just felt out of rhythm like I had just lost the grasp of it all. I sat in the aisle thinking to myself not focused on my work when the manager on duty came around into the aisle I was in and told me it was my turn to go on break. As I walked into the backroom I continued to think about what was going on and just what I could do differently. While on my break I sat in the backroom in silence just thinking of what I could be doing that was making people not want to talk or ask questions to me. Then all of a sudden a coworker of mine came into the back about to go on their lunch break and saw me there in silence sitting and asked me why I was just sitting there. I told them that it was a stupid problem and that I should be thinking about it as much as I should but that the problem was that no costumers seem to come up to me. When I told them this they said “ wow you’re lucky, customers always come up to me” but after that, they told me that they used to experience that when they first started working here and that they only solved it when someone told them that their natural face just wasn’t that welcoming. I thought about that and then they told me “ No offense Derick but when you first started working here, I honestly thought you were gonna be a jerk” and then they explained that I just looked angry or annoyed whenever I was working. I said thanks for the advice and returned to work. Then I just laughed about it and started an experiment where I would smile non-stop for one day while working and surprisingly it helped a couple customers had actually come up to me but that was tiring to constantly smile. I was content with this customers had actually seen me and actually wanted help from me and that made me feel useful but it also made me sad that people had a predetermined idea of me just based off my face and it wasn’t like I knew that my face looked like that, it was just out of my control. This made me think a lot more about what I would look at and that I should take a step back before predetermining it for what I saw and to look deeper into what it actually was.
